Allahabad Degree College (ADC), a Constituent College of University of Allahabad, established in 1956, aims to fulfill the needs of the society in terms of quest for knowledge. It provides equal opportunity to all students, including those belonging to socially and economically weaker sections of the society to study multiple disciplines, including social sciences, humanities, commerce, law, basic and applied sciences, with the aid of best practices, qualified teachers, teaching aids and infrastructure, under the academic leadership of the University of Allahabad. The College provides quality education to all students coming from rural as well as urban background.
Admission in the College is made on the basis of Combined Under Graduate Admission Tests (UGAT- B.A., B.Sc., and B.Com.). Combined Post Graduate Test (PGAT – M.A., M.Sc., M. Com.) and also for Admission test in LL.B. and LL.M., organized by the University of Allahabad. The College prepares an Academic Calendar in the beginning of each academic session. Every effort is made to make this academic calendar conducive to healthy academic atmosphere and also extra-curricular activities. This calendar is followed strictly and amendments are made to it only under extra ordinary circumstances. Use of modern teaching aids is encouraged in the College. These include power point presentations, use of L.C.D. and overheads projectors, diagrammatic representations etc. Students are encouraged to use magazines, journals and newspapers for acquisition of life skills.
The College has an academic environment which is conducive to research activities. Faculty members are granted study leave on the basis of rules and regulations framed by the University of Allahabad and UGC.The College has research facilities, including a library equipped with a broadband internet connection, which is available free to all the staff members. Besides this, research journals in various disciplines, reference books, reports of national and international organizations, census documents, plan documents, etc. are available to all staff members. The College has latest computers in the computer center, where faculty members can analyze their data.
The college has developed a strong base of physical and academic infrastructure, spread over 3 campuses, to meet the growing demand of young boys and girls pursuing the courses of Science, Arts, Commerce, and Law. Special emphasis has been laid on the development of 4 libraries, 3 computer laboratories, and other subject-specific laboratories. Apart from their formal study, the college supports students in appearing and qualifying in various competitive examinations by organizing special lectures on current and social issues. Interdisciplinary lectures are also organized for this purpose. Workshops on personality development and spoken English are also organized. Debates and essay competitions are a continuous part of extracurricular activities. Development of computer skills and computer literacy is a part of the curriculum of various subjects, like Computer Science, Computer Application, Statistics, Mathematics, Defence and Strategic Studies, Psychology, and Commerce. For other students, the college runs a One Year Training Programme of Computer Applications, at a nominal fee. This program prepares students for appearing in the ‘O’ level certificate program.
The College organizes workshops, seminars, lectures, debates, etc. for developing life skills, career training, and personality development of students from time to time. To sensitize the students towards community development and social issues like illiteracy, pollution, gender discrimination, health, sanitation, etc., 12 units of the National Service Scheme are in operation. The management of the college is fully committed for the development of quality higher education according to the norms of the University of Allahabad. For this purpose, the Management always takes initiative to provide modern and state-of-the-art educational technology and the development and improvement of the infrastructure of the College according to the changing needs. The Management emphasizes that all academic and administrative activities of the College should be governed by the principles of participation and transparency. It ensures that the finances of the college are judiciously allocated and optimally utilized, and the procedures and follow-up actions are systematized. There is adequate representation of Faculty members as well as non-teaching staff in the Governing Body of the College
The college carries out its administrative and academic activities in a decentralized and democratic manner. The Staff Council, comprising heads of all the departments (proctor, coordinator, students’ welfare, and librarian), is the highest policy-making body of the college. All the departments have a Staff Committee, headed by the Head of the respective department. The college has a Dean (Academics) for different academic activities. The College also has a dean (research and planning) for research and planning activities. All these committees function in a transparent manner.
